Isn’t it sad that we have a template for mass shootings? First there's breaking news. Then unconfirmed reports. Then confirmed reports. Then eyewitness accounts. Then the poignant pictures. Then speculations about the number of victims. Then the number of people affected. That’s where they get it all wrong. The number of people affected includes us all; everyone who has a child, family or friends. For those with young children, the pain and looming fear is searing.
Those little ones had their whole lives ahead of them. Those teachers had dreams for their future. How can children and families impacted by these senseless shootings ever forget their nightmarish experience? The loved ones are being taken away ruthlessly. Who is to be blamed? Guns? Gunman? Or those putting guns in their hands?
When 9/11 happened, I drove my first born to his kindergarten with slight trepidation. But there was an inherent sense of confidence in the system that something like that would not happen again. The country responded with a whole new Department of Homeland Security. We started following the elaborate security protocols at airports without any complaints. And things seem to be working. Why is there no solution when it comes to gun violence?
Speaking to family members in India it’s hard to explain what’s happening here. While the first question used to be “How are you guys doing?” now it’s “What’s happening there?” Living in the so-called developed country should not have to be life-threatening for anyone, let alone little kids. I’ve heard about a few people in India who recently abandoned the idea of sending their children to America for higher education. We deserve to be blacklisted by the rest of the world.
We might as well keep all the kids in lockdown until their safety is guaranteed. Why is there no Department of Homeland Security from Guns yet? Why not confiscate all those pointless guns?
Any surprise that there are more question marks than periods in this write-up?
